Good Enough To Eat

Voodoopickle are a company who make and sell cute, original and imaginative jewellery items. We caught up with their owner to find out more about what they do.
Hi! If you could introduce yourself and say what your position is in the company?
Hi, I’m Joni and I own Voodoopickle.

How did you start the business and how long has it been running?
Voodoopickle has been up and running since last summer. I studied art and have always been interested in arts and crafts but I had fallen into a pretty boring office job. I was made redundant and saw it as a great opportunity to start my own business and start being creative full time. Things have grown pretty quickly from being just having a MySpace page to having a website, 12 stockists and an army of 30,000 MySpace friends.

What type of items does Voodoo Pickle sell?
We sell alternative, '80s and vintage jewellery. I like to think we offer something different to both the high street and other jewellery companies. I never make anything I don’t like myself or that I wouldn’t wear either now or when I was a bit younger. I spend hours and hours looking for new supplies and jewellery so that things are changing all the time.

Who do the products appeal to?
I try to make and supply things that appeal to a wide range of people. Most of our customers are between the ages of about 14 and 25.We do our best to keep prices quite low so that everyone can afford to buy things. We have all sorts of customers from Indie Cindy’s to Scene Queens and everything in between. Anyone looking for something a bit quirky and different.

What types of fashion have inspired you?
I’m inspired by all sorts of things. Tattoos, modern Japanese culture, what ever music I’m listening to and especially the funky girls I see at gigs expressing their own style. Individuality and confidence are more important than fashion and I like to make things for those sassy girls.

Which is your best selling product, and why do you think it’s so popular?
Our best selling item at the moment is probably the Gummie Bear necklaces. I think they’’re so popular because they’re bright and colourful with an 80’’s vibe and everyone loves sweeties. They’re quirky, totally hand made and also a bargain at £4.50.

How did you discover Fiery Hot, the company who do your artwork?
IA friend of mine owns a record shop and I saw some art work that Fiery Hot had done for him. I really liked the style of it so we used them to design some art work for the website and packaging for our jewellery which we’ve had loads of positive feedback from our stockists about. Fiery Hot are designing some badge sets for us at the moment so they should be on the website soon.

How do you promote your website and products?
At the moment we mostly use Myspace. We send quite a few bulletins to let our friends know about new products. I’ve also done a couple of interviews and competitions through online zines like yourself.

Your jewellery has been worn by the likes of Julia from Rockworld, Kirsty of the Sonic Hearts, and our own editor Suzy - who else would you love to see wearing your products?
Apart from all the cool girls that already wear Voodoopickle I think my dream customer would be someone like Beth Ditto from the Gossip, she’s a funky modern woman who’s all about larger than life attitude bags of confidence and not caring what other people think.

What’s your personal favourite item from your current collection?
My favourite items at the moment are the confetti necklaces, they remind me of kids parties and jelly and ice cream and put a smile on my face during the horrible cold winter.

Do you have any ideas of things you’re hoping to create in the future?
At the moment Fiery Hot are working on some cool exclusive badge designs for us so we’ll have badge sets on the website soon. I’d also like to make some more tattoo inspired jewellery

What’s the most rewarding thing about running Voodoo Pickle?
Running Voodoopickle is very rewarding. Being part of the process from beginning to end is great and there’s nothing better than selling something that you’ve made yourself. I love getting feedback and photos from our customers and hearing that someone loves our jewellery as much as I do is fantastic.
