Push to Fire Interview: Swallow The Sun
by Jason Huckle

Swallow The Sun

Hailing from Finland, Swallow the Sun are a death/doom metal band who are spending an incredible amount of time touring the world this year. Vocalist Mikko Kotamäki spent a few moments with Push To Fire at Hammerfest to talk about the band's tours and life on the road.

How are you finding Wales/Pontins?
We have only been here for an hour, we just came from playing a gig in London. It is interesting though; the place is packed which is good. We definitely prefer playing indoor gigs, you get a better feel for the music.

Your upcoming tour looks very long; Europe and North America, how do you manage to stay on the bus for so long and not get bored?
Well we tend to watch movies a lot, and drink. We tend to get into arguments but nothing serious, although we are not exactly friendly anyway.

How did you come up with the band name?
Well I was drunk in a bar once and I though about calling it Swallow…I’m not exactly sure how I came up with it but them we added sun to make it less rude.

What bands/artists would you most like to share the stage with, past or present?
I think we would probably have to choose Black Sabbath, My Dying Bride and Type O Negative.

How did you feel when in 2007 your album ‘hope’ reached number 3 in the album charts in Finland?
I got myself drunk. It was unexpected and it was a good surprise, but to be honest it doesn’t take much in Finland- it is a small country. I guess it’s hard to compete with Robbie Williams *laughs*.

Did many things change in the band when Pasi Pasanen and yourselves decided to part ways last year?
Not really, we got a new drummer and rehearsed our new album within five days of touring- he’s a great drummer!

Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Not really, we don’t do any of that team spirit bullshit. We call each other assholes and there are definitely no hugs!

What’s the weirdest thing that has ever happened to you at one of your shows?
The weirdest thing to happen was probably when a mosh pit opened up and Markus Jämsen went off stage in the middle of the song to have a shit!
