Push to Fire Interview: Shadows Fall
by Graeme Brown

Shadows Fall recently toured the UK and Graeme Brown caught up with Matt (who plays rhythm guitar for the band) in Manchester.

How is the tour going so far?
It’s been great! Since we got to the UK all the shows have been sold out, so far so good! Glasgow last night was the best so far but tonight in Manchester is the biggest one I think, so it should be the new best!

How has the experience been in England so far. Shows/Fans
It’s great, I always love coming here. I’ve been coming here for well over ten years now and every time is great! I know a lot of people in the states complain about the food, whereas I just come here to eat. I’d eat bangers and mash ten times a day if I could!

Anything special planned for us tonight?
Nothing out of the ordinary from our set. We have a little bit of new stuff and a little bit of old stuff so it should be a decent set. It's kinda tough when you have six records out and ninety something songs and you can only play eight of them.

Weirdest best thing to happen on tour so far?
That’s a tough one to say, usually I’m too hammered to remember anything haha if I do remember it then it mustn’t of been too good haha

What styles of metal influence you when making your new album?
A lot of things, there are a lot of different aspects from death metal to eighties rock even the more mellow stuff like Snow Patrol, which is what I've been listening to a lot recently so I can get my head cleared from metal a little bit. It's all over the place and with us all listening to different styles of music it all comes together as a mess that we like to call Shadows Fall.

How do you create your music, what's the writing process/recording process?
More or less me and Jon will have a basic structure and we will get together with a drum machine or basic ideas or stretch out rough arrangements. Once we have a basic idea on how we want the song to go we will jam out on it for a little bit and let it create itself almost from a simple idea to something that evolves.

Has touring affected the music you have been writing? Do you write on tour?
We don’t really write on the road, we don’t have a lot of time. With all the loading in and loading out, the press like this and anything else we need to do it's hard. We normally wait till we get home and do it all

If you had a chance to work with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be?
That’s a good question, I think I’m going to go with Johnny Cash, I love that guy

What's the response from the new album been like?
So far so good, in the live scenario all the new songs are doing really well and people don’t seem to be bored, we have about 4 tracks of the new album and people love it.

What's your favorite album to date?
That’s hard to say, I think I would have to go with the current album just because it’s new. Eventually it will get old and we will be sick of that one too haha
