Push to Fire Interview: Lostaura
by Leo Kindred

Hi there, what's going on right now?
Right now, we're in a minibus, heading to Lincoln for the 6th gig of the tour.

For those who aren't familiar with yourselves, how would you describe your sound and style?
Big, Atmospheric, melodic indie. Something for everyone!

You've been part of BBC's "Introducing" programme, what do you think of it and do you think it's been a great help for you, getting some exposure?
It's great for unsigned bands to have exposure by such a massive broadcaster! We've got good relations with BBC Southern Counties and BBC Essex, it's great experience and always a bit special playing on the Beeb!!

Do you reckon it's harder or easier than it used to be to get any where in a band?
Obviously, we have no idea of what it was like in days gone by, but we know how hard it is today! With the Internet, iTunes etc. it's easier for anyone to sell music and become self sufficient, but that, in turn, makes it that much more competitive. It especially doesn't help when reality TV are creating overnight popstars!

You've had praise from a lot of sources, have there been comments from people which have genuinely touched you?
Playing 'up North' we always get feedback (good and er...constructive!) and it means more for the average man on the street who's paid a fiver to come up and say "hey that was great" - thanks Tom in Leeds who loved it!! - than to read that someone likes the record or a particular song. They are nice as well though!

Who are your musical influences?
A real mix! We've all got very different tastes and I guess it's that that keeps the tunes unique to us. Obvious ones are Elbow, Editors, Athlete, Pink Floyd and Douglas, the trumpeter from the Lurpak butter ads!

You're on tour around England, how have the gigs been going?
Good thanks! We're a little sleep deprived and really need an early night at some point, but gigs have been good and people have been generous!

How did you manage to get such a good sound on your debut album and how tough was it getting it together and tracked?
The album took a long time to come together and it was recorded over two sessions 7 months apart. We'd been gigging the tunes out for a while, so we were pretty ready! As for sound quality, thanks to Jamie who tracked it and Matt & Ville who produced it so well....again!

Going back to the beginning how did you guys meet and form Lostaura?
It started at school for Dave (singer), Craig & Lew (guitars). Dave (Essex-Drums) met with them through a mutual friend and Kev (bass) joined in June '07 having been a friend if the band for a while.

What do you do in the time between making music and playing?
Play football, watch football when we're not working, but mainly our efforts go into promoting the band and sorting out all the nonsense that comes with that!!

If you had any advice for people trying to get a band together and moving what would you say?
Don't be better than us!! Keep your head down, work at it, keep the faith and don't lose sight of why you're doing it.

What's on the horizon for yourselves and where do you hope to be in the future?
Just to progress as a unit and play more gigs. Festivals are next on the agenda, then probably try and do the first gig on the moon!!
