Push to Fire Interview: Karma To Burn
by Leo Kindred

Karma To Burn

Hailing from West Virginia, Karma To Burn are an instrumental band of the 'stoner rock' variety. With a new record planned for the end of the year and an upcoming European tour in July, they answered some questions from Push To Fire about their recent reformation and their musical ideas.

How's your tour gone, anything mental happen?
Tour has been good, so far no one attending any of our shows has been attacked by killer bees. We have had a few instances of Satan Worshipers showing up and wanting to "orgy" it up in our dressing rooms. We usually don't condone this in public, but since it is the mid-west we have been letting it slide.

To the uneducated what would you say you sound like?
Like angry and careless individuals constructing an amusement park ride.

What made you guys decide to reform after such a break?
We all finally spoke to each other again. Shared some thoughts, apologies, and collectively decided to answer many of the questions we left unanswered.

Your new album Appalachian Incantation is your first in 7 years, what was it like recording after the hiatus and what does it sound like?
Recording was a relative cake walk this time, and we believe it really reflects Karma To Burn circa 2010.

Your choice to include some vocal tracks on the new album is an interesting one – why have you decided to return to this, considering the lack of vocals on the previous two albums?
We don't want to place any limitations on KTB. We can do either style and working with Daniel Davies (vocalist/guitarist with Year Long Disaster) was much easier than our past endeavors, we look forward to more songs with him.

The instrumental approach obviously works for you guys, so what makes you want to use a vocalist here and there?
Again it goes back to the fact that we don't want to be complacent, we want to always be working on trying new ideas, be they instrumental or vocal.

It certainly adds a new dynamic to your sound; would you ever consider making a vocalist a permanent fixture?
We are working on a hybrid of that. A guitarist-singer. Daniel is a great fit for us because he adds to the instrumental side with his guitar skills and to the vocal side because he approaches vocals melodically- unlike most metal guys.

After seeing you live, we were treated to a great cover of ‘Never Say Die’ – can we expect to hear that on an album at any point?
Yes, it will be on a Metal Hammer compilation.

Do you think you can be in a stoner metal band if you've never smoked weed?
No. Absolutely not, what a ridiculous notion.

Any plans to play some festivals this summer?
Yes. We will be all over the place. We will also be playing as Year Long Disaster at Download festival. Woot!

What makes a great festival experience?
To not get attacked by bees.

What are the plans for the future?
New record by the end of this year that changes the complexion of rock music for the greasier.
