Push to Fire Interview: Zebrahead
by J Clique

Zebrahead

Zebrahead have been together for a whopping 14 years so far and have been largely successful ever since releasing their Waste of Mind album back in 1998. Although they're based in Orange County, CA they tour the UK relentless and and one such occasion had a quick chat with Push To Fire about life on tour.

So how have the fans been this tour?
Ali- It's been going really really good actually, most of the shows have been great. We've been getting a lot of nudity.
Matty- No one has died!
Ali- Yea, nobody has died, that's a bonus! And erm, only four pregnancies.
Matty- ..and only one reported case of herpes but they can't prove it yet. The tests haven't got back yet.

So what do you guys like to do before a show? Any pre-show rituals? Or band mascots?
Ali- Well we do get a cage full of monkeys, let them out into the room. Whoever catches the most monkeys and forces them a shot of Jack Daniels, that person is then called 'King' for the rest of the night.

So how is your cover album 'Panty Raid' going?
Matty- It's going good. They used to throw a lot of panties on stage. Like, tonnes! It was raining panties! We have some extra if you'd like some..... I made a quilt out of mine.

This tour has had a lot of sold out shows, so first off well done, but how have you achieved this without the backing of a big label?
Matty- I bought a lot of tickets...
Ali- I did to! … I wasn't gonna tell anyone.
Matty- I bought like a hundred a fifty
Ali- Yea, anytime a shows not selling very well, I just buy couple of hundred tickets. I'm kinda broke now.

If you could work alongside any artist, dead or alive, who would it be?
Ali- I love Dead Or Alive! Haha

We ran into a few of your friends a while back, Southampton Ska band, Kids Can't Fly. You've toured with them previously and they joined you on stage quite often. Did their music influence you to bring brass elements into recordings as well as your live show?
Ali- Well we've always kinda had a ska aspect to our songs, but in general because we all write together, we bring in our own influences. Greg quite likes his metal, I like more rap stuff, Ed likes his punk rock stuff. So we get a nice mix different styles and we always try and get a nice balance between them.

So what're the future plans for Zebrahead? Anything coming up in 2010?
Matty- I thought you just said 2007! I was so confused! I was like 'Dude, I got huuuuge plans for 2007!' but we've got I think 4 more shows here in the Uk then we go over to Japan for a short while, then we're coming back in June for festivals, then I think we'll be writing another record.
