Who are you and what do you do in the band?
I’m Chris, I am one of our two vocalists.
Who else is in the band and what do they do?
We’ve got Joe who’s the other vocalists, Craig on lead guitar, Jonny rhythm guitar and vocals, Paul on bass and James is on drums.
How did Melody of Your Demise get together and when?
Our story is pretty boring to be honest. Me and Joe used to work together and we just got talking about starting a band. We then decided to try it so got in touch with Paul who had spoken to me in the past about starting a band, he then asked his friend Duffy (Our Old Drummer). Joe had known Craig for a few years and convinced him to take up guitar. We then had a few people fill in on rhythm guitar until we found Jonny. We were then set for a while until Duffy decided he wanted to leave due to not having much spare time and because the music we were playing wasn’t his main interest. Luckily we had met James a couple of weeks earlier, and we asked him to step up to the mark! This all happened in late 2009 and over the course of about 4 months!
Did any of you play in other bands before starting this one?
A couple of us had separate projects. The only serious one really was Jonny’s acoustic project I guess called Open Invitation, although I believe he’s starting to play under his name Jonny Gill though now, either way he’s awesome so check him out, he’s just released a split EP with Nathan Luke from York too. I believe Joe used to be in an Indie band but they never played any gigs or anything luckily! James and Jonny used to be in a band I think too but again never gigged and I think it was a more pop-punk/rock style band. Craig had never been in a band and was adamant that he would never play a gig as he “doesn’t do stages”. And Paul had also not been in a band.
How would you describe your sound in five words?
Pretty heavy with upbeat choruses
What was the inspiration for the songs on your EP?
All the songs are about different subjects so they come from different places and it was back when we didn’t write together people just bought it to practice and we worked with it. I would like this opportunity to say that ‘Arrogance is Bliss’ is not about us! It was wrote once we’d played some gigs with bigger bands and done a couple of tours. We realised there was a lot of attitude, ego and arrogance (don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of really nice bands, but that doesn’t make as good song), it’s our look at that subject done in our tongue in cheek way. That said, you’ll have ten seconds standing, when WE tear your heads form you motherfucking shoulders!
How long did it take to record the EP and who did the recording/mixing for it? What was the experience like?
It took a few months doing it on weekends and free time with Stephen Taylor. It was a lot of fun, he’s a really nice guy and we all got along with him really well. He approached us about doing them at his house with him and after hearing his previous work we thought it was definitely worth it! He also works at Peak Studios so if anyone wants work with him I think they’d have to catch him there but we did it at his house which was pretty cool!
Plans for the summer?
We’re almost done writing a new set. The only songs we’re keeping are the three we’ve just released. And by later this year they’ll hopefully be gone too. Not to say we’re not proud of them cause we are, but the new stuff is a step up for sure. We’re started writing everything together, it’s heavier and it’s tuned down. We’ll be playing 3 new songs when we return from a couple of months break in August then hopefully when we support Letlive at the end of the month we’ll have another one or two.
Plans for the rest of the year?
Nothing set in stone yet, but we are hoping to get more songs recorded and we’re looking at getting on some bigger gigs around the rest of the UK and generally build up a fan-base. Also with the release of the new logo and artwork we will see about getting more Merch!
Which bands/artists do you look up to?
We’ve all got a really varied music tastes which is quite good! Between us at least one of us likes pretty much something from every genre!
If you could have the luxury of a rider for your gigs what three things would you ask for?
Lottery tickets/Scratch cards
As many cups of tea as we want (For Jonny)
A massive order from Pizza Hut
Where can we get your record?
Download it free (along with our previous one) from www.melodyofyourdemise.bandcamp.com then since we were kind enough to give it you free tell all your friends to get it too.
Which other York bands would you recommend we check out?
*You Cried wolf – they’re like our best mates and they’re sick! They’re in the process of releasing there new EP too, and so far it’s sounding amazing!
*Tides and River City Ransom – I’ve not seen either yet but they both have some awesome demos and I’m looking forward to seeing them live soon!
River City Ransom are definitely a band I've seen and would recommend too
*Shot Down Stay Down – Heaviest band in York, again I’m yet to see them but from what I’ve heard and the demo they sound like they’re gonna be sweet!
*Then all the well known and popular regulars that everyone already knows like WOLB, RSJ, Beyond All Reason, The Fallen etc. There is a lot of good bands around the local area at the moment, just need more people to come down to gigs and do crazy stuff!
Any tour plans?
Not at the moment but we’d take any good offers! We are really keen to get our music out to everyone, so if anyone fancies taking us on tour with them, let us know!
