Push to Fire Q&A: Kill City Creeps - Daniel Darling
by Meghan Player

Kill City Creeps

For a relatively young band, you have a grasp of a genre that is well before your time - did you grow up listening to your parents records etc?
There were a few bands in my parents collection that got my attention but my favorite music came via friends at school. I do remember going through a friend of mines older brother's records and pulling out an Iron Butterfly album which introduced me to the combination of Fuzz and organ. After that it became a constant search for that sound. I saw a documentary on the history of rock n roll around that time too which got me into groups like the Stooges, the Doors & the Velvet Underground.

What inspired you to combine that old 60 psychedelic sound with a new fresh air of modern rock?
It would be a combination of the four of us playing our part & adding our own touches. I personally listen to 60's music more than any other era but Mon & Knives have been playing together for years and they bring a heavier and more abrasive vibe to the songs. Nina' s punk attitude and love for artists like Patti Smith adds another element to our sound as well. It seems to gel together well, and thankfully without a conflict of style.

There are a lot of different descriptions of your music out there - but how would you describe your sound/music?
Garage, Glam & Soul n Roll

How did the band come together?
I got in contact with Mon first via email when I was still living overseas, saying I was planning on coming back and starting a new band. She had been playing with Knives and said she was keen to play as well. I knew Nina could play the organ as she bought a piano from my family a while back and was using it for teaching. We were all at a friends party and we agreed to have a practice and see if it would work. From the opening chords it was obvious that this was gonna be fun.

Did you have similar ideas on how the band would sound?
We were all aware of each others past projects and style so I think we knew the score, it was a matter of plug in and play.

Did you each bring different influences to the table?
For sure, like I mentioned earlier we are very thankful that our different influences come together with out conflict.

You've been playing at various venues and with various bands - highlights so far?
It's so hard these days to get two, let alone four people, to have a common understanding and enthusiasm towards a band. The friendship that has formed as a result of four people jamming on music together is a highlight for sure.

You've recently released your EP - though are there talks of a new album?
We have enough songs for an album & we are writing new songs all the time. I think early next year we'll compile them together and hopefully produce a long player.

If you were to release a full length album, what would it sound like?
KILL CITY CREEPS

Would you maintain/keep the sound that you have now? Would you develop it more? Is there anything that you would do differently? Would you like to experiment with different sounds?
I can't see us having to mess with our sound at all as we've honed it well to our liking. Making an album is all about choosing the best songs and although it should sound like one piece it should have enough flavours in there to keep it interesting. Experimenting with different sounds is a lot of fun and in the recording process can bring out the best in a song, but I think for our first offering keeping it raw and true to our live sound will be the way to go. Look forward to making it!

Are you looking forward to beginning your residency at the Beresford this coming Saturday, 5th November?
Yep, cool times ahead. We get to play with our friends and kick it!

How would you describe your live sets?
Stomp n Romp

Finally, why should people come and check you out this month at the Beresford?
Ain't nobody like Kill City Creeps in the world so ya'll better check it out.
