Push to Fire Q&A: Grinspoon's bassist Joe Hansen
by Meghan Player

Grinspoon press shot

We last spoke to you about a year ago, overall how was 2010 for the band?
It was hectic - it started with the Big Day Out in January and just kept we just kept touring, ending with a 50 date run all round Australia.

Did the band have a New Years resolution for 2011?
No, we`re way to unorganised to get anything like that together - we`re flat out deciding what songs to play each night without an all-in argument!

You'll be supporting Stone Temple Pilots for their first ever tour in Australia in March - are you looking forward to the gig?
Yeah it`s always fun doing those big support slots in the enormo-domes! The catering and riders are usually pretty good and there`s a lot of interest bout STP coming down, so it works good for us.

Do you enjoy playing supporting gigs? It seems a bit of a rarity for the band to play them nowadays..
It's fun cause there`s no pressure really, just get out there and have fun and rock out. I think STP`s audience is pretty close to ours so it`s not gonna be like when we supported KISS round Australia and played to ten rows of guys in KISS makeup - that was weird!

You'll be heading to the UK shortly for a run of dates, what are you most looking forward to?
Playing to a new audience and checking out the different cities round the UK. We`ve only ever played in London before so we`re very excited. Plus Phil loves warm beer..

Will your setlist vary from the sets you perform in Australia?
Only slightly cause we play the day after we arrive and there`s no time to change the set much. We actually pre-planned for the tour and our last few gigs in Australia were rehearsals for the UK set.

Your touring schedule looks like it will keep you busy until around May - will you keep touring after that, or perhaps take a break?
Probably get straight into demo mode for the new album. Rock n roll breaks for no-one…!

You've been signed to Global Music in the UK, and have also released 'Six To Midnight' in Japan - are there any plans to release previous albums in these countries?
That would be great, but it`s really up to the record companies.

How was the album received in Japan? Would you consider doing a tour of Japan at some stage?
The response has been really good, so we`re looking at getting on some festivals later this year and maybe a small club tour.

Good friends of yours, Unwritten Law, will be heading back to Australia in March - any thoughts on Phil and Scott Russo getting together for an acoustic set again - or was it a one off?
For everyone else`s sake I hope it was a one off . Ha ha!

Do you have any future album plans at the moment?
We`ve all been writing stuff individually so hopefully when we all come together we`re all on the same page and one of us isn`t trying to do a country/rap album or anything like that!

How would you convince our UK readers to come and see you this month?
I would say we are primed and ready to go after 50 rehearsals in Australia in the last two months so you`ll never have a better chance to get the full Grinspoon experience - be there!
