Push to Fire Q&A: Detached
by Henry Raby

Detached

Who are we chatting to right now?
I'm Owain. I play Guitar in Detached.

Tell us about Detached, where you’re from and how you got together? Is there a particular reason why you're not The Detached?
We're a band from South Wales and been going since 2005/2006. We've pretty much had the same line up since we started. Just friends playing music and getting drunk I guess. No reason why we're not 'The Detached', just ended up being 'Detached' and we stuck with it.

How would you describe Detached’s sound?
Fast paced, bouncy and fun.

You guys have been gigging since 2006, do you feel like the same band as when you started off 5 years ago?
Ye still feels the same but lots of things have changed. We take things more seriously now, reliased you could actually be in a band and tour about and not just play music to no-one.

If Doc Brown gave you a time machine would you give the 2006 version of Detached any advice?
Wouldn't drink as much before we play. Thats about it I think. Would be hard to imagine if things went different. Not much I would change.

What are the essentials you take on tour?
Tooth Brush, Sleeping Bag, Pillow, Deodrant, Clean Clothes, Equipment. Think thats about it.

It’s coming close to a year since None The Wiser, you’re last EP, came out. Can you tell us about how it was put together, what’s the response been since you put it out there?
We recorded with Todd Campbell in his studio in his parents garage, he's in a band called Straight Lines who are really good. You should check them out. A guy called Horsebites did the Artwork for us, which is really cool. His artwork is amazing so was cool to have him do our E.P. We released it ourselves and financed it ourselves which I think is important and we're all proud. The response has been really good, people seem to like it.

Who made the artwork for None The Wiser, what influenced the battle image? Which side are you on, the bison or the crocodile (or is it an alligator)?
I think one of us came up with the idea and on a whim asked for it be be drawn up and saw the rough sketch and liked it. I think im on the Bison's side, they're tough.

The genre of ‘ska’ has existed in some form or another for about 50 years now, what do you think defines ska in the 2011?
Whatever you want it to, I don't really like labels and genres. It just closes down doors and makes it easy for people to like/dislike music.

Is it possible to say there’s a UK ska-punk ‘scene’ from your perspective?
For sure, there is lots of bands, promoters, venues, fanzines, websites that are very much deticated to ' Ska-Punk' and helping keep the music and bands going.

Does coming from Caerphilly and Wales in general influence the music you make? What's it like to gig in your local area?
I guess so, not directly but in some shape or form. There's nothing going on in Caerphilly, the last time gigs got put on there was a riot... Newport and Cardiff is what we class as a 'local' gig.

Off the top of my head, Wales is home to Three Minute Warning, Dirty Revolution and Miacca, are there a few other ska bands kicking about Wales you’ve gigged with or would like to gig with?
Ye there's Captain Accident, Sharks Don't Sleep and lots of other bands too. Seems to always be new bands coming out, its pretty good.

How do Detached write songs, is there a lead writer or is it more of a collaboration?
Usually Rhys will come up with something and things go from there. It changes but it all starts with one idea/riff/melody from someone.

Do you think there's a recurring theme or idea in your lyrics?
Girls, drinking and home. Rhys is a player.

What are the future plans for the band?
Touring Europe in December. Can't wait for that. Writing an Album inbetween gigs and tours and try and scrape money together for that and get that out there.
